Designing Around Constraints
When DUSQ (Formerly InnerGize) first approached us, there wasn't a production-ready product waiting to be refined.
There was a small founding team, a functional proof of concept, early market validation through Shark Tank and pre-orders, and a clear need to transform an idea into a manufacturable device.
The challenge was not to design the most advanced wearable possible.
It was to develop a product that could realistically be manufactured, scaled, and delivered within the constraints of an early-stage startup.
Like many hardware ventures, DUSQ faced a complex set of limitations: tight budgets, aggressive timelines, limited manufacturing resources, and the realities of building a sophisticated consumer product within the capabilities of the local supply chain. Success would not come from adding features or increasing complexity, it would come from making the right decisions at the right time.
From the outset, the project was approached through a Design for Manufacturing (DFM) lens. Every aspect of the product was evaluated not only for user experience and aesthetics, but also for its impact on tooling, assembly, sourcing, production yield, and long-term scalability.
Part count was minimized wherever possible. Material choices were guided by availability, manufacturability, and cost efficiency. Assembly architecture was simplified to reduce manufacturing complexity and improve reliability. Surface finishes, fastening strategies, wall thicknesses, and component interfaces were carefully engineered to strike the right balance between performance, durability, and production feasibility.
The objective was never to create the perfect product.
The objective was to create the most achievable product.


For an early-stage company, successfully shipping a first-generation device often creates more value than endlessly pursuing an idealized future version. Every decision was therefore rooted in practicality, ensuring the product could move confidently from prototype to production without compromising the core user experience or brand vision.
Over the course of development, the initial proof of concept evolved into a fully realized wearable designed around the realities of manufacturing rather than the freedoms of concept design. The constraints that initially appeared as limitations ultimately became the framework that guided smarter decisions and accelerated progress.
The project reinforced a principle that continues to shape our approach at Dotform: successful product development begins with understanding the stage of the business. The right solution is not always the most sophisticated one. It is the one that aligns with the company's resources, manufacturing maturity, timeline, and growth ambitions.
At Dotform, we view design as more than aesthetics. It is a strategic tool for reducing risk, simplifying complexity, and helping businesses bring products to market with confidence. Because the strongest products are rarely designed in spite of constraints, they are designed around them.
